During the course of the year leading up to and during the time of my elective, I found myself exposed to and exploring a number resources which I feel have added tremendously to my path of discovering Intergrative Medicine and a reflection on this path would not be complete without recognising and sharing some of these here.

THE DOCTOR'S KITCHEN
Dr Rupy Aujla
A GP in the NHS in the UK, Dr Rupy Aujla, is a doctor who firmly believes in plates over pills! After he dove into the research around the benefits of healthy eating and lifestyle to manage (and ultimately reverse) his heart condition, he set out to become a doctor who provides this information to his patients. He has developed a voice on various social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook where he shares his knowledge on food and how to cook with the public.
He has also founded the UK’s first ‘Culinary Medicine’ course, accredited by the Royal College of General Practice. This course aims to teach doctors and health professionals the foundations of nutrition and … how to cook!
His 2nd cookbook "Eat to Beat Disease" is set to launch later this year, in which he has compiled much of his research into the evidence around food and healthy eating.
I believe that he has had a monumental impact on my path to not only rediscovering my passion for medicine but discovering more of the doctor I hope to one day be!

CONTINUOUS LEARNING
During the course of the year, my elective and still now I make effort to broaden my knowledge, feed my interest and keep up to date by reading a number of article, reports and books. While there have been many, I would like to highlight one or two that I feel are worth mentioning.Â
Firstly, Healthy Medicine by Dr Bernard Brom. This book was suggested and lent to me by my internal supervisor and written by the man who has been dubbed "The father of Integrative Medicine in South Africa". A book dedicated to one man's exploration and discovery of the field and the principles he has come to develop as a practitioner.
Another book being The Mind - Gut Connection by Dr Emeran Mayer which delves into the intricate relationship between the microbes in our gut, the enteric nervous system, central nervous system and how it all plays out in our overarching picture of health. An expert gastroenterologist explores and explains the workings of what is now know as the second brain.
A book which I have yet to get my hands on but which came highly recommended by one of my external supervisors is Brain Maker by Dr David Perlmutter. Again about the incredible impact diet can have on how our brains function.
